Did you even consider that nobody knows the answer to your question? I just think not many people here know much about the older Excel. I believe most members here are more involved in the newer Sonata, Azera, Santa Fe, etc.

Should have all 150 viewers posted "I don't know?"

Nova resource has a good point when there is a good chance that no one knows the answer to your problem(s). also, your specific car is not very common to most people. from what i've noted, the majority of people on this forum are from the US. if the excel was ever launched in the states, i've never seen one.

if it helps though, go to www.hmaservice.com. it is the website that the techs use in the dealerships. you have to sign up to use it, but it is 100% free and only takes a few minutes to get set up on. i woudl highly recommend it to anyone... i actually try to note it in all my postings on this forum. it is a great source of information, as it is written by the factory engineers and the techs who have to work on those cars everyday.

sorry if this seemed like a personal attack. i mean absolutly no harm or disrespect by it. i wish you the best of luck with your problem solving and hope you can get your vehicle running again soon.

best regards.

If I remember correctly, the Excel was sold in the US from 1985 through 1994 (X1 1985-89; X2 1990-94). I believe it replaced the Pony and then was replaced by the Accent.

'nova resourse' is, in the main right, just because a topic has had numerous 'reads' it does not mean that anyone is technically able to give an acurate answer, also anyone can read the topics on this forum who may not be members and not registered to post. l do not think that new members are ignored, far from it but sometimes a new member asks a question that is not possible to answer on the forums, in alot of cases you would need to see/drive the vehicle to come to any sensible conclusion and therfor this forum has it's limitations on answering some questions. l am sorry if this site has not been able to help you with your question but please 'keep at it' and l am sure you will come to enjoy it.

Dear aus,

Please see your original post on the gearbox problem. Hyundai sold the Excel in the US from 1985 to 1994. The car had a horrendous quality record which was not redeemed in the US until the release of the 2001 Elantra.

The newly designed Elantra with the Beta II 2.0 liter engine went on to win many awards and accolades in the US from Motor Trend magazine to J.D. Powers & Associates quality awards. The architect of this turnaround in the US was the former VP of marketing for Toyota which Hyundai recruited sometime in 1999.

We, the forum, just did not have the answer on a car manufactured 6 years after sales were stopped in the U.S. Please realize that your car is 18 years old.

As far as isolated cases, the US segment of the forum steps out on a limb when we try to advise the rest of the world on models not manufactured to US spec(i.e. a member today was asking about a Hyundai Starex???WTF?)

QUOTE(ausGeoff @ Jul 12 2007, 11:39 AM)
Thanks Nova for such an obviously disingenuous response!  It's people like you who eventually ruin forums by flooding them with puerile responses to perfectly legitimate questions posted in good faith.  I guess if this makes you feel like a big man in front of your "mates" here, then you've achieved your aim, regardless of how pathetic it is.

It's obvious (well, it is to me at least, if not you) that I wouldn't expect ALL the 150 viewers to respond - it just would've been nice if 2 or 3 had showed a bit of common courtesy I guess.

Someone really needs to tell you that unless you've got something helpful to say, then you're better off just shutting up.  Better to not say anything and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it!

As I won't be posting here again, may I wish you and your friends here all the best for the future (although in your particular case Nova, I can't see it being very fruitful).

---Geoff.

Let me see if I understand the situation:
1. You come here and ask a question that gets no replies.
2. You then complain about the site and members here because you didn't get a reply.
3. When I try to explain why you might not have gotten a reply, you personally attack me.

Might I remind you that moderator montego agreed with me:

I guess you should have taken your own advice:

I as an oldie can I second what has been said by Nova and Montego. I cannot recall the model of vehicle that you own

I am also called Geoff !!!

Shame you didn't get a reply but I have found that many of the members do not look at the site daily or weekly even - they look when they want to catch up and help if they have the Knowledge to help.

The site is not run by Hyundai and many of us that join in the rechoricht do not have any technical knowledge at all.

Cheers and :amen:

My wife bought a brand new 88 Hyundai Excel. We drove that vehicle for 140,000 miles. During that time, we replaced two timing belts, two starters, two batteries, one alternator, 3 sets of tires, one valve cover gasket and had the driver's side seat bottom repaired due to torn stitching.

We drove the daylights out of that car in Colorado, as an off road vehicle and when we moved to Arizona, we used it as our truck, loading it until the suspension was completely compressed.

Of course, when we moved to Arizona, we added air conditioning to that poor little Mitsubishi engine. Still couldn't kill it. :)

Since it was only a four speed manual with no overdrive, we literally drove it with the pedal to the metal on the Interstates. Top speed was 85 mph and God only knows what the rpm was, but it was very high, judging from the engine noise.

I changed the oil faithfully every 3,000 miles and it never used a single drop between changes.

In spite of the harsh weather in Colorado and the blazing sun in Arizona, the paint still looked good. I kept her waxed and it was garage kept some, but not all of the time.

When we donated the Excel to our church in 1999, it was still running great and was given to a Christian School teacher who drove it for several more years, 50 miles per day.

I knew of several people who owned Excels during this period and no one, that I know of, had any serious problems.

Not bad for a car that only cost my wife and me $4,995.

I know this is an old old thread but...

The Excel arrived in the United States in 1986 and Canada in 1987, replacing the Pony.
