Dear benkoh,
I had a 2001 Sonata with an air bag sensor problem. Yes, the control module can cost USD $470. Here is what your mechanic should do:
1. Clear the trouble code and see if this code returns. 2. Check for Hyundai Technical Service Bulletins for the Matrix 1.8. There may be a TSB for your air bag control module. 3. Test and confirm the air bag sensors are good. 4. Test the air bag control module. 5. If the module fails the test, attempt to buy a replacement from an auto recycler in Malaysia. 6. If you cannot find one in Malaysia, you could query auto recyclers in Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia. 7. You could check on eBay for an air bag control module. 8. Since your Matrix has the 1.8 liter engine, is this the Beta engine? The Kia Spectra with the 1.8 liter Beta engine may also be a suitable donor for your air bag control module. 9. You can also purchase from auto recyclers in the US. They are very willing to sell and ship to an international customer. 10. Last resort....buy a new control module from Hyundai.
