Need some expertise advise from all Matrix user.

I owned a Matrix 1.8, the air bag light on without any reason recently. But I suspect this may due to after changing a new alarm system (not Hyundai original). Because the air bag light on just after 2 days the alarm system changed. I guess.

I sent to my Hyundai service center and the computer shows "SRS LIGHT ON CODE: B1620 PASSENGER BPT FIRE", and the technician jump to the conclusion saying that this is due to the faulty of AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE ASSY and need RM 1,500.00 (approx USD 470.00) to replace a new one.

Is this correct? Is the control module such an expensive price???

Is this advisable to repair this problem from others 3rd party shop rather than Hyundai service center?

Dear benkoh,

I had a 2001 Sonata with an air bag sensor problem. Yes, the control module can cost USD $470. Here is what your mechanic should do:

1. Clear the trouble code and see if this code returns.
2. Check for Hyundai Technical Service Bulletins for the Matrix 1.8. There may be a TSB for your air bag control module.
3. Test and confirm the air bag sensors are good.
4. Test the air bag control module.
5. If the module fails the test, attempt to buy a replacement from an auto recycler in Malaysia.
6. If you cannot find one in Malaysia, you could query auto recyclers in Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia.
7. You could check on eBay for an air bag control module.
8. Since your Matrix has the 1.8 liter engine, is this the Beta engine? The Kia Spectra with the 1.8 liter Beta engine may also be a suitable donor for your air bag control module.
9. You can also purchase from auto recyclers in the US. They are very willing to sell and ship to an international customer.
10. Last resort....buy a new control module from Hyundai.

It sounds as if a seat belt pre tensioner has gone off or the control nit is faulty

Hi,
More more idea,
While buying my Matrix, week ago, I also had an airbag light on.
Check the cable connector under the driver seat (unplug and plug again). Sometimes after changing the position of the driver seat, the connection on some cable is broken.
These cables are connected to security belt system.
I have heard about this problem several time from the people driving matrix here i Poland. I had also similiar problem with my citroen.
Hope this maybe help you.
Regards
Roman
