Hey guys,
I recently had some general 60K maintenance done at a local garage for a 4-cylinder 2002 Hyundai Sonata with the understanding that it would be cheaper than the dealership.
The dealership wanted $495 just to do the timing belt!
The local garage replaced the balance shaft belt, timing belt, serpentine belt, and accessory belt for $400.
However, while working, he noticed that the timing belt idler and balance shaft tensioner were leaking a little bit of grease, recommending replacement. Also, the timing belt tensioner was not keeping the timing belt completely tight and had a bit of slack in it, recommending replacement of the timing belt tensioner also.
This quickly brought the bill up to $665. The timing belt tensioner along added $155 from having to buy it at the dealership.
I was wondering if any of you other guys had had these other pulleys and tensioners replaced and if their replacement sounds justified to add and additional $255?

I had my timing belt replaced about a year ago on my 4-cyl 02 Sonata. It had >120,000 kms already and no record of the belt ever replaced. I don't see why you should change yours at 60K unless you are talking miles. The price tag is about right at $600+/-
