Dear chad,

Could be as terkar says but let's complete a diagnosis:

a) Do you have grinding in any other gear, including reverse?
B) What color is your hydraulic fluid in the clutch master cylinder reservoir? How old? If black and don't know, you might try replacing the fluid by bleeding through the slave cylinder nipple.
c) Have a friend depress and release the clutch of the car shile shifting through the gears with engine stopped, and you observing with your head under the hood. Does the clutch fork mechanism appear to move smoothly back and forth for each shift?
d) Have you checked your clutch pedal travel per the owner's manual?? Is the point of engagement quite low? Your clutch should fully release after 3.5 (from memory) inches of travel, but be fully engaged/no slip 1 inch from the top of your release stroke.

Sounds to me like you don't have a skipping clutch (indicates high wear) but a failure to disengage (opposite problem grips too much).

After eliminating clutch issues, you may be left with a transmission problem but that is part of the 60,000 mile warranty. If you are very close to breaking 60k miles, stop driving the car until you get it to a dealer for evaluation.

Byron

First, define "grinding"--could be the syncros or the clutch/flywheel, but you probably don't need a new one.

If it's only 3rd gear, it's more likely the syncros than anything, which are known to be fairly touchy on 2nd and 3rd gears, at least on the 6-speed. For me a new set of linkage bushings helped a lot. You can get some from Kartboy.com (though I don't know if his site lists them for the Evo (same as the Tib) anymore) or from KJBmotorsports.com

well it only does it going into 3rd, no other gear. and i dont really know how to define grinding...but it just has a quick grind going into 3rd at a higher rpm.

I have a 2005 automatic, and mine has a problem shifting into 3rd as well. It will rattle the whole car unless I lift off the gas just before it shifts. They replaced the transmission after 5K miles but that didn't solve the problem. They flashed the software on the shiftronix and it was fine for a year, until I reached across the car to grab something and knocked the car into manual shifting. I moved the shifter back over and it immediately went into the problem of shifting to third again.

I finally just gave up.

That's really not the same problem though. Auto trannies don't have clutches or syncros, so it's not really related. That is a strange problem though, and sounds like it has something to do with the Shiftronic since it happens after you move it over there.
