HELLO THERE.
THESE ENGINES ARE PRETTY TOUGH OLD BIRDS :460: AS THEY SAY.
HYUNDAI DO MAKE ENGINES FOR DIGGERS & OTHER BUILDING TRADE VEHICLES ETC.
A LANTRA ENGINE HAS QUITE A FEW BELTS INDEED ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE AIR CON.
A HYUNDAI MAIN DEALER CHARGES ROUGHLY £163.95 INC VAT TO REPLACE ALL BELTS/SPARK PLUGS & THEN RESET THE ENGINE BACK UP & TUNE.
KIND REGARDS.
P/S: I WOULD NOT IMAGINE YOU HAVE DESTROYED THE ENGINE IN ANYWAY.

if you are talking about a broken timing belt, which l think you are, then it will have caused engine damage, it's almost certain you will have bent valves

My '04 Elantra is approaching the 60,000 mile mark.
Its a fine car that handles and runs well.
I have followed the recommended service intervals
to date and have no complaints thus far.
I'm told that, at 60,000 miles, I need new timing & drive
belts along with a repeat of the 30,000 mile service to
include a basic tune-up and a few other new items.
It seems that 60k miles is a bit early for a new timing belt
but that is what they recommend at the dealer.
My jaw almost dropped to the floor when they told me that the
entire 60k mile service package is over a thousand bucks!...
Like if I'm going to spend THAT much on service I may as
well put it towards a down payment on a new car (as if
thats not their intended goal in the first place).

The service rep told me that a factory Hyundai timing belt MUST be
used or the 10 yr./100k mile power train warranty will be null & void.
i.e.; if I use an aftermarket timing belt, and it slips or breaks, any
resulting damage will not be covered under the existing warranty.
This sounds like one of the biggest bend-overs I've ever heard.
Both Gates and Dayco make timing belts for the Elantra that are
non-stretch, self lubricating, and gauranteed for 100k miles.
These are both very reputable belt manufacturers and their
products are not cheap - but they are known to last awhile.
I am curious to know if anyone out there has tried either of
these aftermarket timing belts and your experience with same.
Any input appreciated.
