Hello all,

We bought an '07 Azera last week from a dealer.

My understanding is replacement/additional keys can only be obtained through either the company or a dealer with proper equipment. Our local dealer told me that they would need to send the order to the company as they do no have the key cutting equipment and that the company will only cut a package of three - two keys and one valet - at $175 for the package.

Is this correct? If so, can dealers sell individual keys and do they set their own prices? Any dealer recommendations?

Thanks,

Ron

Not sure about the quantity, but they are laser cut, which a lot of places can't do. But the big thing is the anti theft transponder in the key for the limited, thats where the big cost of the keys is.

The key blanks themselves are only $20. The "company" that they are referring to ordering from is actually Hyundai, and you can only order the Azera keys from Hyuundai in a set of 3. Apparently they do not have any place in town that has a laser key cutter.

We generally sell the key blank to the customer then send them to the ONE place in town that can cut those keys. Not only that, but they can only make a copy of an existing key. They can't cut one from a code. Then the customer has to come BACK to the service dept. so we can program the key to the car. It's a PITA for the customer especially. We've never had to order a set from Hyundai so I don't know if they will come already programmed to the car.

Is it that you just bought this car and all the keys were not with the car?

Is one or more keys were not with the car, why not insist that the dealer pay for and
provide you with all the keys that he should have provided in the first place?

Try that and see what happens. Good luck.

Yes, I understood it to mean that it would be Hyundai who cuts the keys.

But, your answer indicates that it is possible to get keys outside of Hyundai (maybe not for me locally, but perhaps). The Hyundai dealer I spoke with said nothing about key blanks, although I only checked with one Hyundai dealer.

We are in Minneapolis-St. Paul, so it would seem to me that someone in this metro has a laser key cutter, if we can get the blanks.

For reference, what is your cost for programming the key?

Thanks,

Ron

Yes, just bought it. But not from a Hyundai dealer (actually a Honda dealer).

It was after all papers were signed and they had our check that I found out that there are no other keys. They (the salesman and the person who handled all the paperwork) said it would be no big deal to get extra keys from a Hyundai service department when I asked them separately on my way out. Which has been the case with any car we have had in the past, so I didn't worry about it.

I called back to see if they had found any additional keys and when I told the salesman the cost of the keys, he didn't offer any assistance, so no reason to think they would now.

Thanks,

Ron

Yes you can get them cut outside of the dealer as long as you have a key blank and either the key code or another key to copy from. The key blank part number is 81996-3L010. I'm not sure, but I think the service department charges a half hour labor to program the key, which at our labor rate would be $42.50. It would depend on what labor rate your dealer uses.

Also note that the key WILL NOT start the car until the dealer programs it to the car, because the security system doesn't recognize the key.

:)

Yeah. No "big deal" to those two flunkies. :liebe011:

Just because they "didn't offer any assistance, so no reason to think they would now" is not
the right train of thought from you! Nor is it your correct approach to management.
IF you do not come right out and ask someone who is in authority, the answer is of course "no." :P

So ask! Tell them that you expected a complete set of all keys when you signed the
paperwork and gave them your check. A full set of keys is to be expected, correct?
Now that you have found out how expense a set of replacement keys are and that you thought
you were buying a complete car, you expect them to take care of this problem.
That's too much money for you to have to come up with out-of-pocket because
they omitted the fact that all the keys were not with the car as they
should have been prior to you completing the deal for the car.
Would you have bought the car that way had you known beforehand that all keys weren't available?
Of course not! You would have insisted that they provide a complete set of keys or no deal.
They would have written into the paperwork that a full set of keys would be provided
for you either by you going and getting them yourself or whatever.

It's up to you. :P
Talk to the overall manager or the owner of the Honda dealership and tell him under
no uncertain terms that you expect them to provide you with those
missing keys that should have been provided in the first place.

That's too much money for you to have to pay because of their mistake.
How about your time and all the running around you will have to do?

Don't you have small claims court in Minnesota?

Good luck. Don't take "no" for an answer and deal with the head honcho only. :whistling:
Go there and do it! No phone calls either.

:amen:

The car was probably a repo and they are lucky to have any keys.
