Hi,
I have owned my Manual 1.4 2007 Getz since new and it holds its rpm slightly when i take my foot off the throttle.
I find this a little annoying when i have to adapt my driving style to avoid over revs when changing gears. I have noticed this strange characteristic on some other new cars also.

Does anyone know what causes this or if it is possible to elliminate.????

It does not seem to happen when free revving the car in neutral.

It sounds like it could be a faulty throttle position sensor as I had a similar problem on my VX Commodore V6 auto.

I would suggest popping the bonnet and revving the engine directly from the throttle butterly, if it's not sticking at all then it's an electrical problem rather than a mechanical problem and you're best off having a professional look at it.

what have been the cars you've driven prior?

modern cars are tending to have heavier flywheels than older ones, and so when you're driving, particularly accelerating, they will keep spinning for longer and the flywheel will also decelerate slower when you back off while shifting for example. could be this?

if so, you could have it machined or get a 1.3 litre engine's flywheel from a TB getz which i think would be lighter. mind you the engine won't run as smooth as it currently does.

Thanks for the reply guys.
I did rev it from the throttle body and it closed normally. I've also had faulty TPS on commo's in the past so i was pretty sure it wasn't that. It could be true that it's a heavy flywheel. That actually makes alot of sense. Most noticably the characteristic appears in the 1.8 engine in astras and SRI barinas. Anyway i'll have it looked at just in case, otherwise i spoze i'll just have to get used to it. I'd rather not mess with the standard flywheel at this stage
Cheers
