Hello everyone,
I have a 1998 Accent and this is weird. Sometimes--although it's starting to do it more often--when I first crank up to drive off, the headlights, A/C and, as I discovered Sunday on my way to church, Overdrive doesn't work. It doesn't do it all the time, just randomly. And like I said, I didn't know about OD not working until Sunday. I've hit the dash, turned the lights off and on, everything, still nothing works. Then, after a few seconds of driving, or just sitting there, whamo, everything just comes on and starts working again. Sunday, I thought my transmission was messing up until the A/C kicked on and started working and then it shifted into OD. I guess all that's on the same circuit. I do know something about mechanics, as I've rebuilt engines before and everything, but this has me stumped. Anyone out there have or had the same problem?
Crazy thing is, it's almost like a loose connection somewhere, but it NEVER does it going down the road, like when I hit a bump or something. It's just when I first crank the car after it has been sitting idle for a while or overnight. It's driving me nuts. Oh, one more thing, and I may be wrong about this, but it seems to do it only at night when I have to use the headlights. Weirdness I do agree. (-:

Thanks in advance...

milli

You might try replacing the fuses for just the items acting up. Seriously, old fuses will develop thermal fatique fractures that are a hairline crack...impossible to spot and cause intermittent defects. I have explained to several Forum members to just spend the 20 bucks and replace all of their fuses on a 10-year old car....it fixes many many small problems. The $20 is for a $16 fuse assortment boxwith fuse tester, and $4 more for an extra box of 10 amp fuses.

If the new fuses don't fix the problem, well you are only out $20.

Ok thanks Byron,
It is 10 years old now and I know when a car gets that old and being ours has 230,000 + miles on it, you pretty much have to pay real close attention to them. I just had to replace the alternator the other day. Heck, I guess that's pretty good for a car with that many miles on it. (-:
I may just do that then--replace the fuses for what's acting up.

Very appreciative,

milli
