Hi all,

Lately I've been smelling a lot of funk out of my AC. I minimize the use of recirculate and instead use fresh air as much as I could. That certainly helps but every now and then, I still get blasted in the face with funk-o-rama.

I'm thinking of spraying some Lysol into the AC with the fan running on high in the hopes of killing off any mold or mildew that's causing the smell.

1. Is it okay to do this?

2. If the answer to #1 is 'yes', what opening do I spray into? There appear to be two - one right beneath the (right) wiper and under the hood, where the (right) wiper is.

Thanks!

Have you tried changing the cabin air filter?

Good thing you mentioned that - I forgot to mention that in my post. Yes I did - just last week in fact. I was hoping to see a dead animal in there to justify the smell. Alas, there was none. LOL!

I had that in my Miata. The drain line from the condenser was pluged up. You would not believe the slime growing there. I unpluged the drain line and used a full can of lysol. This cleared the funk up.

Pulling out the drain line should not be a problem. I wonder if putting it back in is?

I hope it's something I can easily reach from under the car flat on the ground since I don't have ramps.

Just run the air on high for a while and see if you get water dripping. I always turn the air off for the last few blocks of driving and leave the fan on to blow out any moisture in the system. My wife's car had the same smell until I had her start to turn the compressor off and leave the fan on for a while.

What do you mean turn the 'air' off and leave the 'fan' on. Do youhave auto climate control? Do you mean leave the a/c button off?

I get a face full of funk EVERY morning. I blame it on all the smoking.

Very informative link there Sort Em. I'll definitely use a can of Lysol. I'll empty that sucker into the system if I have to. LOL!

Thanks everyone.

@dcjwlee--Try this....WURTH new car scent

@normandelli---1Z a/c cleanercurrently on B/O from properautocare. Try right from Einszett store online (call first to check stock) 1Z KLIMA Cleaner

A/C heat cleaner

One other thing to try when not using the A/C for at least a day is Natures Miracle from a pet store and pour into the outside intake vent. It's an enzyme that breaks down bacteria that causes the smells. It worked on the following in my cars (on the rugs/seats) and got rid of all smells in a short time. Vomit, baby formula, chocolate shake, and probably the worst I ever had....cat urine! The smells are caused by bacteria normally and the enzymes work just like a cesspool and break it all down. No bacteria...no funk. Good luck.

If you park under trees, there could be leaf/water stuck in your car. Try to clean up drainage in the front firewall. There is a drainage pipe, just stick something in there and rotate. If I'm right you'll see water coming out of the pipe.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I'm sure everyone here is going to need to deal with this sooner or later.

Following the link from Sort Em, I set the fan to high and listened to where the air was being drawn in. It's right under the hood. Pop it open and on the passenger side, you'll find a perforated section of plastic right where the wiper arm is.

Just put your hand over it and you'll feel the air rushing in. THAT's where I dumped the Lysol. LOL! I sprayed with the temp selector on both cold and hot - not sure if that makes a difference but I left nothing to chance.

I'll find out over the next few days if that helped or not. If not, then I move up to the Einzett Klima-Cleaner from Sequoia's link.

Cheers!
