I love my V6, but if it isn't the right car for you it isn't :)

I been sayin the OP REALLY needs to test the V6 before making any choices, and I'll keep saying it.

When I said don't buy a small 4 cylinder for highway driving I was referring to cars like the Fit, Yaris, older corollas, civics and tercels. There is little benefit to pushing them on the highway, particularily if you prefer/have to drive 75-85 mph to keep up on the highway. You lose the benefits of the wee tiny little motor and you will find you have to keep the revs quite a bit higher, which is louder and more annoying, especially with a smaller, lighter, less well insulated car and it also guzzles more fuel.
Theoretically, the little cars are rated high for highway driving, but only at 50-60mph.

That being said, I feel on local highways that I DO need to keep up to traffic in a little puddle jumper much more so than when I'm in the Sonata. The Sonata is a bigger, safer car, and if I do suddenly need to mash the gas, I can.
The Fit/Yaris/Smart4two scare the crap outa me.... the first time I tried to pass on a two lane highway in a Yaris was the last time I'll ever try that.

/soapbox rant.

"only" 60mph lol ..

I'm like grandma I get out on the highway and set the cruise at 100km/h only time I go above that is if I need to overtake for some reason on a multi-lane or of course to overtake on a two lane highway.

I love driving on the 401 at 100km/h - stay in the right lane, click on the cruise and go all day with no worries - I may pass 1 or 2 cars the entire trip - it's great.

My last post was not in response to you, dogstar. I fully agree, and that's what I was saying, one needs to test drive both 2 cars, and as morrjr noted, evaluate the cost difference -- and make his own decision.

There is no right and wrong here.

This is funny. After almost THREE months we finally got our lives back together. They finally finished the road construction on the stretch of highway between home and work (though a VERY short drive...), and the new QUIET Asphalt is now so quiet, it's fun to drive, almost like gliding..... Before the construction my average speed was 75-80. But after all those long months driving 45-50, I now find myself calmly driving 65-70...... Why, I do not know..... Maybe I got OLDER during those 3 months?

What IS interesting, I get the impression that cars around me, in general, are also driving slower than before.... maybe it's the fuel prices?

V6 no question. I didn't even seriously give the 4 cylinder much thought either. Given the minimal difference in fuel economy between the I4 and V6, the slight difference in overall price and the considerable boost in performance (especially if you do highway driving), the V6 just made more sense to me. Also, Hyundais have bad depreciation. You'll probably be living with the car at least 5 years if you want to get your moneys worth. In otherwords, unless you want to lose your shirt, you'll be sitting in that drivers seat a long time. Might as well make it enjoyable.

Don't drive in L.A or Chicago :)
I was doing 85 on the way to San Diego and getting passed like I was going backwards, eventually I just said to heck with it and kept up with traffic.
100mph, bumper to bumper for 2 hours.... it is no wonder they have 75 car pileups!!

Saying you need a six for highway driving is not looking at things rationally. Granted, getting up to highway speed is faster with a six cylinder, but once you get the car up to highway speed, it takes only a small effort to keep it there.  A four cylinder engine will keep a car going at highway speed just fine: why do you think the Chrysler Hemi shuts down four cylinders once they get to cruising speed?

a 4 cylinder car will also keep the RPM's much much higher at highway speed than my V6 does. im guessing at 70 MPH, the 4-banger it closer to 2,700-2,900 RPM's (anyone with the 4-banger want to confirm this?).. well the V6 is closer to 2,100-2,200 RPM.. makes the engine work less (extra gear).. less wear and tear on the engine is good.. driving the exact same conditions, style and roads over the same length of time, V6's (larger engines in general) will "generally" last longer than smaller engines... (obviously not ALWAYS)

plus, it just feels smoother in the V6... (subjective, i know)

or even NJ... you go 60 here (on most roads), you'll end up in a ditch... i push my luck dropping my speed to 68-69 and everyone passes me... (and i hate that)

Both engines have timing chains.

If you want all around power then the V6 is worth the extra money, if you want better city fuel efficiency the I4 makes more sense.

I still do not regret getting the V6.

Freeway driving
I get about 30-33 mpg if drive no more than 60 mph.
I get about 25 mpg doing 75 mph.

City
13-16 mpg.

It's OK. We're not offended. I was actually playing with the idea of trading in my Sonata for an '09, but I wasn't even considering a V6.... I-4 all the way.

To each his own..... Fact is, more and more I-4 are now being sold.... Maybe more I-4s than V6?

I like my V6, that is good that you like your I4's
i was gonna get a 4 cylinder but dad said it is only 10 cents to go first class so i got the V6 no regret excluding the current fuel prices.
