Hey people,

I'm seriously interested in buying myself a Tiburon, most likely a 2003 - 2004 model with my budget. One concern I have however is the fuel efficiency of the Tiburon. My other option is a 2000 model Celica, which has a 140 KW, 1.8L VVTLi engine gets over 600 kms off a full tank of premium around town. The 2.7 liter V6 Tiburon however, which is rated at 127 KW, has considerably less fuel efficiency on paper.

Could people please give me a real world indication of;

(a) approximate kms you get off a full tank around town, and

(B) approximate kms you get off a full tank on the open road.

Cheers,
Jon

PS. I realise I could just get a 2.0 liter 2003 model which is better rated on fuel but I'd prefer the V6.

Hi, I will tell you my experience with the 2.7L V6 Coupe(Tiburon/Tuscani) 2003.

Driving normally I can manage to do 8km/l in town, which means 440km with a full fuel tank

If I drive like my grandfather I would be able to reach 10km/l that is 550 km.

Outside town it depends how fast you drive. I usually go on highways at 140km/h and reach 11-12 km/l

I have not driven the Celica but although it has a lot more power it is not a turbo engine therefore the torque is way lower so if you appreciate a nice running engine with good torque the V6 is great. Moreover if I'm correct the Celica has it's power and torque at high rpms (around 7000) therefore it's a completely different driving style needed to get the most out of it.

Well, I have kept track since I got my car about 2.5 years ago, and have averaged 26 mpg in mixed driving--which is........about 10.9km/l. On highway trips I've gotten as high as 31 mpg, which is......about 13km/l. A lot depends on how you drive though--I drive quite conservatively, coast up to red lights, don't take off incredibly fast etc. You can get horrible mileage really quick if you're not careful.

And it's not really useful to talk about miles (or km) on a full tank. What's empty to you might be 1 gallon left while to someone else it might be 3 or 4. The only way to really know is to track your mileage and how many gallons to get you back to full, which is what I've done.

thanks for the replies people.

It seems like the 2.7L V6 is actually quite economical provided you drive it sensibly then. For the most part I'm a sensible driver, however I do appreciate the extra torque the tiburon, especially having owned a WRX previously.

yeah you are right about the celica, to get anything out of it you really have to get the revs up. Until the revs are up and the VVTI kicks in it's pretty much like the same as a 1.8L corolla engine, which I guess is why they can get 600+ kms off a tank around town.

My girlfriend has a white 2004 V6 tiburon that we put some 18" MK11 chrome wheels (well I did, she stood around and watched while I'll struggled to undo the wheels nuts that hadn't been loosened since the car rolled out of the factory!). I walked out of the house this morning and saw it sitting next to the white celica (her old car) that I'm considering doing up, and at present the tiburon blows the celica away with respect to looks. To be fair though the Celica is still rolling on standard alloys at the moment. The plan would be a set of 18" chrome rims, a Buddy club body kit, clear tails lights and sports exhaust and lowering. That's all going to cost me a lot though, about $18,000 all up, which is why a tiburon with a simple set of chrome wheels sounds so appealing - no need for lowering, sports exhaust or the body kit.

Another downside is that once body kitted the celica has absolutely no chance of getting up my steep bloody driving.
