Hey folks,

My AC just died on my 2002 Elantra. Not sure what happened, but here's what I know.
- The AC light does go on in the car
- there is no 'sound' in the engine that the AC is working (ie. the fan in the engine that normally you can hear when you turn on the ac)
- the fuses *seem* to be ok

Called my local Hundai dealership and they are charging $100 to diagnose what the problem is. Should I go to a local shop instead, or not mess around with it and bite the bullet to get it done at the dealer?

Any ideas on what I should do? Is this problem going to take a while to fix? I am leaving for the long weekend in 10 days and want to have it fixed by then.

Hi, sorry about the a/c. **** with the dealer, unless you have some sort of warranty. Most any shop will look at it free, do a better job, and be happy to have you as a customer. Good luck.

took it into the dealer. $100 to diagnose and it looks like it will be a new compressor that's needed costing in the 600-800 range...they will let me know within the hour

no choice on this one eh?

No choice? You've got to be kidding. Just the 100.00 to look at it would have sent me out of there in a hurry. Will they discount the bill 100.00 after repair is completed. I had one of my other vehicles repaired at a cost of 600.00. New compressor and clutch, new dryer, re-charge, labor and tax. Absolutely no charge (rip off) for diagnosis. Do a google search, compressors are less than 300.00.
