make sure to measure the mileage, how much of a performance difference was there?

I did the old fashioned trick, I gutted out the air box. Big difference in throttle response and acceleration all the way up the RPM range.

No K&N for the 3.3?

Make sure you register on the K&N site to be notified when the air filter for the 3.3 litre is available, I did :amen: ... they likely take a number of factors into consideration in developing products for new models BUT interest is definately one consideration and registering for notification shows them we are interested! :liebe011: Plus I will get notified the minute a new filter is available :460:

Yes, I've registered as well. I had one in the Mazda van we had, and liked it. Don't know about mileage improvements, or performance gains, but it was COOL! The K&N decal went on the back window, to warn others not to mess with the MazdaPowerVan!!! (MPV.) The demonstration display at Canadian Tire definitely showed an increase in air flow compared to a plain paper element, so who knows. I don't think it would make a 10-15% increase, though. Actually 1-2 HP is probably it, but that's better than a decrease... :w00t:

The last time I checked with K&N all they need is someone in S california to volunteer their car so they can make up a filter. Hopefully someone with a 3.3 lives nearby. Besides my wifes gl--I have a lx--can't wait for the K&N---the car is fast already---how does blowing the doors off an accord sound??????

Oh and I did check the filter for the 2.4 is too small for the 3.3---even though the service manager at my Hyundai dealership told me they used the same air box!

I would love to try a K&N too, but I'm just wondering about intake silencing. I would be willing to tolerate a nice honking sound at wide open throttle, but not a lot of extra noise while cruising.

I'm also dreaming about a couple of other mods to wake up the car a little. True dual exhaust, heavier action shocks to stop the "float" at cruising speed, and Recaro seats all come to mind. :) :auto: :)

IMHO K&N's suck. :grin:

They filter worse than OEM paper filters and can foul up MAF sensors(see the GM TSB).

I've seen indentical cars run both K&N and OEM paper and from what I have seen the cars using a K&N filter tended to have dirtier intake tracts/manifolds.

Newb question :)

How do you replace the engine air filter? The manual says to unclip (I see four) and then I should be able to remove the box to replace the air filter. But it doesn't look like there is a lot of wiggle room there with the intake tube attached. Do I need to remove that as well?

What exactly did you do to gut the air box?

They've had one out for the 3.3 for quite a while. I've had mine in for months now, and they had them out for quite a few months before I got mine. Paper elements do not filter better, and definitely do not flow better. Sure you could "build" a paper filter that would filter better but it would be so restrictive it would negate any benefits at all.

Looks like there may be a change for the 2009, or they just don't have it listed yet. The only one they show for the 2009 is the 4 cyl.

If you want to buy one right from K&N here's the link. I got mine from them because after a little searching around I didn't really find anywhere that was much cheaper, if any cheaper.

I've had K&N filters on so many cars for so many years that I lost count. I've never experienced a single problem though.

what exactly does this filter do? haha i know nothing about them but it seems like everyone has one. I went to canadian tire today to ask about getting an oil change and mentioned a k&n filter and the d0uchebag working there started laughing and he said i dont think they make those for your car..haha..those are for high performance vehicles and i was like uhh yea actually they do make them..i just want to know if you carry them or not!! im sure hes driving home from work right now in his high performance 1994 tercel...

For me, it saves money. You pay a higher up front cost (~$40USD) and a filter cleaning kit ($14USD) which gives a couple of cleanings. You'll get at least 30K-50K between each cleaning.

I used to have a K&N intake (different than the drop-in replacement discussed here), for 170K miles. Never cleaned it once. Passed every single smog check and I did not notice any gas mileage drop as time wore on.

As for performance ... I'm not quite so sure :P You step on the gas pedal and that lets air in. The O2 sensor detects how much air is passing through and determines how much gas to put in. The filter lets air flow in faster ... but to me, that's the same as stepping on the gas pedal more.

If you went full throttle, then, yes, you have more acceleration and probably a bit more horsepower. And those specific situations, you get more "power."

As for better gas mileage, that claim makes no sense to me. A cold-air intake, but not for the drop-ins.

If I'm wrong, someone please go ahead and correct me. I would definitely like to know better.
