Brake Line Corrosion

I own a 2001 Sante Fe and have had ongoing problems with what appears to be premature corrosion. At this point I have replaced all the power steering lines and now need to replace all my brake lines due to corrosion at a cost of over $1000.

I live in Canada where salt is used however I am meticulous in undercoating my vehicle annually to ward of off corrosion.
I have noticed from posts on the forum others have experienced power steering line corrosion in geographical areas in which salt is not used on roads. I am left to question if Hyundai has used inferior quality steel in the producrion of metal lines carrying fluids such as power steering and brake fluid.

Have any other members had problems with brake lines corroding?????

Thank You

Dear polak,

No problems with my power steering lines corroding on a 2004 Santa Fe in Colorado, and salt is used here. I did note some corrosion of brake lines at 110,000 miles on the front brake lines, but the rear brake lines were in better shape. I considered this normal fair wear and tear.

What is considered normal corrosion on a nine-year old vehicle in Canada? Also, I wash my undercarriage at least once a month in winter.

Thank you for your response.

Although I don't wash the undercarriage of my Sante Fe, twice a year (fall and spring) I have the undercarriage sprayed by Rustcheck a company that sprays a corrosion preventative spray on the undercarriage. In the 40 +years I have owned and driven a car in Canada of various domestic and foreign manufacturers I have never had to replace power steering lines on any of those vehicles. I tend to buy used vehicles about 1-2 years old and drive them for up to 15 years. In my experience driving those various vehicles I have had to repair corroded brake lines on 2 occassions.

I've attached a link addressing the experiences of other Sante Fe owners with regard to power steering line corrosion.

Are you guys replacing the lines with aftermarket parts or going to the dealer? I have just come across the power steering lines corroding, will look into the brake lines this weekend... I went to a couple of auto parts stores, but nobody has the long p/s line listed in their computers. I was thinking an aftermarket part will be better than Hyundai. But, if nobody sells it, I will have to go through the dealer.

Thanks
