Hid Flickering! Help!

I'm new to the forum. I have had my 2011 Sonata SE for about 2 weeks now and I love it! I've been reading up on HID kits and decided to order some. I bought a 8000k w/ relay harness from hidnation. Installation was pretty easy, but when I was driving home after they were installed I noticed the left headlight had a very slight flicker to it. It's now bugging the crap outta me!. I saw that cancellers will prevent this from happening, should I go ahead and order one of those? I also saw on this forum that cancellers arent needed for a 2011 sonata but a relay is needed and vice versa. Can both a relay and canceller be installed? I don't really know what to do. I would appreciate some feedback, thanks!

If you already have the harness installed with your hid, the problem is either with the ballast or the bulb. Switch the two ballast to see if the other side now flickers, if it does, it is the ballast. If the flicker continues on the other side, then it is the bulb. Just send it back to get a replacement. No need to spend anymore on cancellers.

I really appreciate the help guys, Ill have to switch the ballasts around and see what happens. I sent an email to the company and they responded saying that a canceller wouldnt fix the problem for my vehicle, he said I would need to get a slim digital ballast to correct the flickering.

Digital ballasts are supposed to be the standard now a days. If you don't mind me asking how much did you spend on your non-digital ballast?
The original price was around $40.00 for the whole kit but I added the lifetime warranty and a relay, so after shipping it came out to around $85.00. Their digital slim ballast option was an additional $28.99 per ballast I think.

Speaking of HIDExtra and flickering, does anyone else's HIDs flicker right at startup. Mine flicker a second right at startup (like a fluorescent bulb) and then are as solid as you like. My XenonSupply HIDs don't flicker at all, they just come on smooth and easy. It is interesting that the HIDExtra bulbs do seem to get to full power a little faster.

That's the ignition charge. I don't know why you wouldn't be seeing it on "auto" or with one set of ballasts/bulbs and not the other.

The ignition charge is a split-second higher wattage charge needed to ignite the gases in the bulbs. After they ignite, a maintenance charge is sent to the bulb to keep them lit. Then, as the gasses get hotter, they get brighter. It works the same way with fluorescent bulbs.

I just caught this, interesting. I have XS slim ballast line on the Sonata and the fat ballasts on my other 2 cars. Both of them flicker at startup. Hmm.....

So that you guys can see what I'm talking about, here's a video of what I'm referring to. You'll notice the XS low beams just come on and show no flickering while the HIDExtra fogs do flicker at start. In the vid, the passenger side (farthest from camera flickers right after ignition) the near fog pulses a little bit a few seconds later. The low beams are steady the whole time. After the startup however I see no more flickering. Both kits are using harness. It's not really a problem, just something I noticed since I had not seen it in the XS kit that I've had for two months.

P.S. Apologize for things getting blurry but the camera got confused and I didn't care to repeat since the flicker doesn't happen when the bulbs/ballasts are warm.

Ohhh! Excuse me, my fault. I thought you meant that your HID's had a "instant on." Yeah that is a bit annoying but like you said, it should be fine. Its probably the way the ballast was made.

Hi Diehard127,
I bought three cheap Xentec brand ($45) kits and had the flickering problem with all of them. After reading up on AC kits, I decided to give it a try. Do a ac hid kit search on ebay and you'll find them for about $50-$55. After installing the ac kit and ac bulbs, there's zero flickering at all. Give it a try and you'll see.

Xentec! I remember seeing that brand when I initially got into the whole HID thing. I bought a JLM kit, from which I also saw on Amazon.com alongside Xentec. I had flickers on my Accord on both sides. It costed about 40 dollars. Will never ever again do cheap Ebay/Amazon kits.

My Passenger side does the same exact thing.

hey jared... i just talked to a online guy from hidextra... and he said that the relay is not required for our car.... so i'm just like should i or should i not... some people say it is required and some say it is not..... is everyone here using the relay?
OMG, put the dog gone relay in. There are so many threads in here dealing with the shorting of the body control module just get the harness!!!! If you dont believe me, do a search on this forum for the word "fried".

So many people want to play with the big boys and then only spend a ten pence on the product and then wonder WTF happened. It a cheap insurance part for crying out loud.
