Noisy Engine at Start up

When my car sits for a few hours and it starts the engine is very noisy and rattily, for a second or so. One of my coworkers heard it the other day and made a comment. Oil is changed every 4000 miles, level is good. This is consistent and does it every time it sits for a while then starts. Anyone else notice this ?

Mine does this even after its most recent oil change. If I have the windows down in the garage and start the car it sounds like a thrashing machine. Even my wife says that sounds like it is about to blow up. I must say I owned a 2011 Sonata, a 2012 Sonata then upgraded to the Azera. 5 trips to the dealer for an air leak in the roof, latest trip was at the dealer for 2 weeks for a new roof seal. now this noise? Never had any problems with either Sonata both which had 60000+ miles when traded in. What gives? Did I get the lemon?

Really don't know. The dealer does the changes I am going to ask when I take it there to have this noise investigated. Same dealer that did both Sonatas, none of them ever had this issue. By the looks of the threads the Cadenzas also are doing the same thing. Has to be something with this engine.

Noisy engine at Start up

I have had the same problem for over two years (19000 miles), especially when starting in the morning in the garage. Have not been able to reproduce it for the Dealer where I have had the oil changed since purchase. It doesn't sound like "lifters" to me, its more of a rattling than knocking sound. Doesn't last long, especially when warm.

If you consider the location of the oil filter on the 3.3, you would think that more people might have this problem. I wonder if there is an anti-drain devise that isn't working on some cars. You would think that an "upside-down" oil filter like on the 3.3 & 3.8, would drain all it's oil in an hour or so.
You get a rattling sound like that when you change your oil, and the engine is without oil for three or four seconds, on start up, until pressure is built up.
This can't be good for an engine to have this happen every start-up.

I remember watching a YouTube video of an Azera oil change, and they mention that you had to be very careful when installing the two "O" rings on the filter body.
I wonder if a twisted "O" ring could cause the oil in the filter to drain back into the crankcase?

The guys doing oil changes, at the dealer, are often hurried.....Maybe they don't even install the small "O" ring.

I don't know if the engine in the new Azera has a timing chain or belt. But in our 2006 (and many had this problem), the start up "lifter noise" was the timing chain tensioner. We were told many times by the service department that this was normal--but it isn't.
The new Azera has a timing chain. As for the oise at startup, this happens on some cars. If it is only for a second or two. Some engines drain down more than others.

When I first got my Azera I heard this also - and immediately thought "no oil!!!" - cause that's sure what it sounded like. I raised it as issue with the dealer and they told me it is normal with Hyundai's. First car I have ever heard where that is "acceptable". Still scares me every time I crank the engine.

My Accord and Continental both had timing chains and neither one ever made such a racket.

That's a load of BS.

Ok so I have been away for while.
They replaced the CAM chasers,a and the CAM shafts. Took a week.

Update still not fixed.

Took it back to the dealer. They had an engineer from Hyundai come out to look at it. He said it is the CAM phasers. My dealer told him they replaced all of them.

Now they are replacing the motor and taking my original motor back to Korea to tear it apart and see what is going on.
