Oil pressure switch nearly ruined our day!

Greetings! Hope no one else has this issue- but our '04 3.5 LX sprouted a leaking oil pressure switch. Nearly ran it out of oil! The insidious thing was that it failed in such a way that the oil light did not come on- even with the key on,engine off. Noticed oily shmooze on the back window, and dripping underneath. With the bellypan off, there was a pretty good stream of oil spurting out of the switch once the rpms were raised above idle. Didn't leak at all at idle tho. The LFD (local friendly dealer) had to order us one- 17 bucks. Now I always look for that oil light after turning the key on before starting it.

oh yes- I tried to just put in a 1/8 inch pipe plug to hold over till the new switch arrived, but the metric threads are just a little smaller and the pipe plug would not thread in. Had to wait for the part.

Also- what a great forum! Wonderful info and willingness to help! Thanks for letting me sign up!:D

It was really no problem to change- 15/16 deep socket with extension did the job- just kind of tight to get it started in by hand. Not much room next to the AC compressor.

Yes this forum is helpful!! for example, I never knew there was a transfer case that needed oil! Just thought it was taken care of by the trans fluid. Thanks again for the good Info!:)

Yeah, the transfer case is a common SM problem for leaking and it does it slowly enough that the thing is ruined before it is caught. I had my timing belt done at 82k miles and it went through one of those multi-point inspections where they are supposed to check everything. Well, I changed the transfer case oil shortly after that and it was only about half full. Went back to the paper with all the check marks on the multi-point inspection and sure enough- they don't look at the transfer case. I now have a squeeze bottle of transer case oil handy(for topping off) every time I change engine oil.
